The best travel cameras for beginners – Backpacking Tips

Perfect cameras for your travels

After spending a lot of time here taking pictures, I have been asked several times what camera I can recommend for backpacking. Since I would like to save you the work and research, here are my cameras that I can recommend for you to travel. If you have any questions left, just ask in the comments section below.

First of all, you have to decide on a criterion, what is most important to you about the camera?

Unfortunately, there is no camera that combines every of these points in one. So you have to decide what is most important for you. According to these three features, I recommend three cameras each and write why I recommend them.

Cameras small Sizes:

1.1 Sony DSC-WX350

Sony DSC-WX350, the smallest camera with 20x optical zoom, 18 megapixels, Micro USB connector for charging.

My recommendation for you, if it should be as small as possible and the biggest advantage is that you can recharge the camera with the micro USB port. More technical information and the opportunity to buy can be found here.

1.2 Sony DSC-WX220

The Sony DSC-WX220 is the little brother of the above named camera. Small pack size and 10x optical zoom together with 18 megapixels and Micro USB port for charging. My recommendation for someone who wants the smallest possible camera. The pricing difference is not really big, so if you don’t need the smallest size, please take the WX350 instead. More technical information and the opportunity to buy can be found here *.

1.3 Canon Ixus 190

The Canon Ixus 190 is small and compact. The 10x optical zoom together with 20 megapixels is a good combination if you look for a cheap and reliable camera. The charger is separately, so unfortunately no possibility to charge via USB cable! My recommendation for someone who is looking for a cheap but technically good camera. High zoom cameras:

2.1 Nikon Coolpix P1000

The Nikon Coolpix P1000 is the newest camera of Nikon and their ultra-high zoom series. The Nikon 1000 offers a 125x times zoom. So this is compared to a dslr lens from 24 to 3000mm. really incredible if you are going for photos and things which are far away of you. A super-fast autofocus and a big 3.2” monitor help you to get great photos. You can record 4k videos as well. The camera offers 16 megapixels for photos, which is fine for everything you need.

My recommendation for everybody who is interested in wildlife or taking photos of other things far away. More technical information and the opportunity to buy can be found here *.

Nikon Coolpix P900, the second largest available zoom camera available on the market, 83x optical zoom, 16 megapixels, charger separately, size is neat, you definitely need a separate bag to take this camera. My recommendation for someone who wants to cover all areas and also wants to pick up details from far away. More technical information and the opportunity to buy can be found here *.

Conclusion

These cameras are my recommendations for your journey. I intentionally did not include any SLR or system cameras, these are even larger than all the cameras mentioned and require more training and knowledge. The bigger size and weight prevents most people from taking their good cameras with them while traveling.

If you think that you have to bring a SLR camera or system camera, then write me an email or a comment below and I’ll try to help you there as well.

Have fun while traveling!
